Effect of Postal Strikes on Businesses

The recent Royal Mail strikes have had a considerable effect on many UK businesses due to postal delays.

Interviewed on BBC's Working Lunch last Thursday, Stephen Alambritis of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) stated that 6 out of 10 businesses believed that the strikes were having a negative effect on trade. Reasons include reputation being damaged as goods would not be received by customers in a timely manner.

However, he also stated that businesses were expressing empathy with the situation of Royal Mail workers.

Some are worrying that the backlog could lead to delays in HM Revenue & Customs receiving their paper tax returns, which could lead to October 31st deadlines being missed and penalties being incurred.

HMRC representatives have stated that in such circumstances, appeals are possible. It would be a good idea to keep hold of a proof of postage.

For the smooth running of your business, opting to email rather than post could make things easier.
